Scientific Explanations – Constructing an explanation: Written narrative

Below are several sentences that could comprise most of the written narrative (except for an “and” or a “the” etc.) for why the ball slows down after the kick. Drag to arrange these sentences (or sentence fragments) in an appropriate order to make a good narrative. A good narrative usually begins with a description of the interaction(s) involved and is followed by statements about the various energy transfers and changes. The statements should be in a logical order that makes it easy to understand the explanation. The last sentence should connect some energy change to the situation being explained.

A) After the kick there is a contact push/pull interaction between the ball and ground.

B) There is a transfer of energy between the ball and ground.

C) The thermal energy of the ground increases.

D) The thermal energy of the ball increases.

E) The kinetic energy of the ball decreases.

F) Because the kinetic energy of the ball decreases, it slows down.

Feedback: Below is the correct order for the sentences that comprise the explanation. It is okay for C) and D) to be reversed and for E) to go before C). However, A) should be first and F) should be last.

A) After the kick there is a contact push/pull interaction between the ball and ground.

B) There is a transfer of energy between the ball and ground.

C) The kinetic energy of the ball decreases

D) (and) the thermal energy of the ball increases.

E) The thermal energy of the ground increases.

F) Because the kinetic energy of the ball decreases, it slows down.
