Information about this bird
(Information from a display plaque for this bird)
This beautiful young red-tailed hawk was donated to the UW-Whitewater Biology Department by Hoo's Woods Raptor Center in Milton WI. This non-profit raptor education and rehabilitation center received this bird after it was struck by a vehicle. Sadly, the bird died of its injuries.
What is going on with the unusual coloration?
This bird shows a condition called leucism, the partial loss of pigmentation, including carotenoids. This results in white coloration, white patches or spots on the skin or feathers. This condition is discernable from albinism as it does not affect the pigment cells in the eyes (albinism shows pink eye color).
Note the leucistic crow as well.
